Welcome to 'Transmitting to Earth'. I'm Charssun and I'll be your host. This blog and podcast is a byproduct of VoyagerRadio.com and is intended to provide the most timely information about this Internet radio station. It is also intended to be a fun and accessible electronic journal with commentary focusing on Internet radio, podcasting and webcasting issues and technologies, music, and some of my other interests. I also offer personal perspective about being an Internet radio broadcaster (and podcaster).

I recently came across an article about Arbitron and Edison Research's findings about Internet radio audiences. The article's author, Paul Maloney, believes that Internet radio has enough of an audience now to create a serious model for advertisers. Bob Bellin disagrees, believing there is a discrepancy between what Arbitron and Edison is telling us and the actual numbers of people listening.

It's difficult to say who's right in this matter. Sooner or later, we're just going to have to take the plunge ("we" referring to Internet radio stations in general, not VoyagerRadio in particular). Will people continue to listen to Internet radio once they are bombarded with advertisments? Maybe, maybe not--yet if Internet radio takes an entirely different approach to its advertising model, such as the more targeted advertisements which are possible with Internet technology, people may not just be willing to listen to such ads but may actually feel like they are being given a service.

This may sound unlikely when you're listening to yet another commercial for that diet "solution" you've only heard about a hundred times over the past six months. (You know, the one that had you chuckling over the absurdness of its claims the first few times you heard it but now prompts you to turn the dial every other time you hear it?) Yet consider the possibility of hearing an ad for something you're really interested in--the latest release by a chillout electronica artist, a new hardware audio player that allows you to listen to streaming Internet radio wirelessly, a new telescope which incorporates the latest technologies...the possibilities are endless, and wonderfully specific.

I've introduced these articles as a topic of discussion in the Internet Radio Lovers Discussion Group. Join the conversation by visiting the Internet Radio Loves homepage.
